Day Trips: Places to Go, Things to See

Rehoboth is one of the largest and most active towns in southern Delaware, offering some of the most exciting activities, recreations, and sights at the beach. There are a lot of things to do in this quaint coastal town, so start your day with an extra large cup of coffee!

Theres no better place for that morning cup of joe and breakfast at the beach than Café Azafran. Located one block off of the boardwalk, Café Azafran offers fresh, healthy, and creatively prepared food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Refuel with a late breakfast or early lunch and prepare for an afternoon of shopping in downtown Rehoboth.

Rehoboth Avenue has a great variety of unique local stores for even the most seasoned shoppers; however, here are four stores that are worth the trip inside. Don’t be enticed by the flare and flashing displays of most of the shore stores! For the best evening beach apparel, stop in at either South Moon Under or Quiet Storm. These locally owned apparel stores are located on the south side of the avenue and just a block and a half from the boardwalk. Need a new pair of Reefs, Rainbows, or Tom’s? South Moon Under or Quiet Storm will have exactly what you’re looking for.

This second local store is bound to have something that will bring you back to your childhood. Gidgets Gadgets Retro Emporium specializes in retro toys, collector vinyl’s, and humorous novelties, bringing together great experiences of yesterday and today. Don’t be surprised to see replicas of your favorite childhood toys such as Mr. Potato Head, A Barrel of Monkeys, or even a Slinky.

Finally, the last must stop shop for anyone visiting the Rehoboth Beach area is the Sea Shell Shop. The Sea Shell Shop offers hundreds of products ranging from beach themed home décor, pirate treasures and jewelry, miniature lighthouses, ships, and boats, and of course sea shells! Located right on the avenue, this is the perfect place to pick up some great gifts to bring home or send to your family and friends.

Since you’ve just about shopped till you dropped stop by Dolles Salt Water Taffy store for a sugar rush to keep you going through out the rest of the day. Since 1910 Dolles has been making delicious salt water taffy, buttery caramel popcorn, creamy fudge, and other delicious candies that has made its faded orange sign an iconic landmark and a must stop destination of the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk.

Be sure to visit our last two favorite local businesses, Carltons and Azure Clothing as you make you way towards JAM by Eden for your evening dinner reservation. JAM is located one block north of Rehoboth Avenue on Baltimore Avenue, next to the Atlantic Sands Hotel and Conference Center. It is best known for its innovative cocktail infusions that combine various types of alcohol with local fruits, herbs, and spices. These unique infusions and its season inspired menu have made JAM a local favorite since it’s opening in 2010.

Save room for dessert at the nationally famous Ice Cream Store located right on the boardwalk! The Ice Cream Store has been featured in publications such as the USA Today, Gourmet Magazine, and was even featured on the FOOD Network. There are over 125 homemade ice cream flavors to choose from ranging from traditional flavors such as African Vanilla, Delaware Peach, and Chocolate Chocolate, to more exotic flavors such as Booger, Bacon, and Sweet Corn.  The Ice Cream Store is bound to have at least one flavor (and probably many more) that you will absolutely love. Don’t be afraid to be adventurous and try something new!

Conclude your fun filled day with a relaxing walk down the mile long Rehoboth Beach boardwalk. First built in 1873, the boardwalk has recently undergone a major renovation but still maintains it’s vintage feel. Relax on one of the many signature white benches and enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells that can only be found at the beach on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk.
